Gerbils are the "BEST" small caged animal for kids as well as mom and dad! we've tried them all but my kids have only been "happy" with gerbils .
Top 5 reasons to get a gerbil instead of a hamster , ferret or guinea pig.
# 5 ....NO SMELL or very little smell far less then a hamster and tons less then a ferret or G. Pig
(they are desert animals so the have little urine smell) so moms and dads can't smell the animal in the house..
# 4....... They play and are awake during the day they are not nocturnal like a hamster or ferret.. So they are awake when your kids are....
# 3 ...... Little to no Bite!! gerbils bite far less then Hamsters, Ferrets or G. pigs- sorry hamster folks that a well known fact! (my girls hold them tight, hug them, run with them it's amazing what they can do with them and still not get bit!)
# 2..... They are very curious when well socialized they enjoy getting into your hands from the cage and often do not run and hide.... ( ours are well kid socialized)
# 1...... Long lived , they often live a year or even two longer then a hamster! (hampster averages 2 years -a gerbil averages 3 &1/2 some to 5 years!
Our gerbils are well socialized.
